Our Story

Step Up Family, Inc. was born from a legacy that began more than three decades ago. Families who lived in our homes stayed not just because they could afford them, but because they felt respected, welcomed, and treated like family.

Over the years, tenants have written heartfelt letters calling us “the best landlords ever” and sharing how safe and supported they felt. Some lived with us for ten years and counting, leaving only for major life changes such as marriage. Others asked if we had “anything cheaper” because they did not want to leave the “family”.

What developed, naturally and quietly, is something deeper than a rental agreement. It was affordable belonging—affordable dignity, affordable stability, and affordable peace.

Step Up Family exists to protect and expand this legacy of housing with heart.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide safe, stable, below-market homes and to ensure families never lose access to affordable housing simply because a home needs repairs or renovations.

We are committed to:

• Offering quality homes with essential amenities at below-market rates
• Supporting families with financial education and budgeting tools
• Connecting residents with job placement and career development resources
• Creating a housing experience rooted in dignity, care, and mutual respect
• Preserving affordable homes in Southeast Michigan through renovation and upkeep

The Step-Up Family Plan

A Pathway to Stability for Single Mothers

Our signature program, the Step-Up Family Plan, offers single mothers up to nine months of rent-free housing while they work toward permanent housing, job training, or stable employment.

Participants receive:

• Rent-free housing for up to nine months
• Mentorship and encouragement
• Financial literacy and budgeting support
• Guidance toward employment or career training
• Case management to help build a secure future

This program gives mothers and children the breathing room they need to rebuild and rise without the constant fear of being homeless.
